Steps taken in emergency when truck breaks through ice

Steps Taken In Late or Early Ice

  1. Stay Calm:

    • Take a deep breath and remain as calm as possible. Panic can impede clear thinking and hinder your ability to respond effectively.
  2. Don't Open Windows:

    • Keep the windows closed. In most cases, the windows will still be above the waterline, and keeping them closed will help maintain buoyancy.
  3. Unbuckle Seatbelts:

    • Unbuckle your seatbelt to ensure that you can move freely within the vehicle.
  4. Exit Through Window:

    • If the windows are not electric and can be easily opened, exit through them. If not, use a window breaker tool or any hard, sharp object to break the side window.
  5. Escape Towards the Rear:

    • Escape towards the rear of the vehicle. Water pressure is lower at the back, making it easier to open the door or swim to the surface.
  6. Swim to Safety:

    • If you're not far from the edge of the ice, swim in the direction of the ice edge. Use a controlled, calm swimming motion and avoid thrashing.
  7. Get onto Ice:

    • Once out of the vehicle, kick or swim to the surface and try to get onto the ice. Use your arms to lift yourself onto the ice shelf.
  8. Roll to Safety:

    • Roll away from the hole to distribute your weight more evenly. This helps minimize the risk of breaking through the ice again.
  9. Signal for Help:

    • Signal for help immediately. Use a whistle, shout, or any other means to attract attention. If you have a cellphone and it's still working, call emergency services.
  10. Get Warm:

    • Change into dry clothes if possible. Hypothermia can set in quickly, so take steps to stay warm.
  11. Seek Medical Attention:

    • Even if you don't feel injured, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Exposure to cold water can lead to conditions like hypothermia, which may not be immediately apparent.

Remember, prevention is key when venturing onto frozen bodies of water. Always check the ice thickness, follow local guidelines, and avoid unnecessary risks. If in doubt about the safety of the ice, it's better to stay off it.
